Former Chief Executive Officer of SriLankan Airlines Kapila Chandrasena has held posts at another state institution while holding his post at the national carrier, the Presidential Commission investigating the malpractices at the airline was told Wednesday.
During his tenure as CEO of SriLankan Airlines from 2011-2015, Kapila Chandrasena has also held posts as the Acting CEO and a Consultant of the Mobitel, the wholly owned subsidiary of state-owned Sri Lanka Telecom.
Secretary of SriLankan Airlines, Dalreen Thirukumar made this disclosure testifying before the Presidential Commission of inquiry appointed to probe the alleged misconduct in the SriLankan Airlines, SriLankan Catering and Mihin Lanka.
According to general law, Kapila Chandrasena as the CEO of SriLankan, has to inform the airline in his annual disclosure that he is holding a post in another company.
Ms. Thirukumar testifying before the Commission stated that although the Finance Ministry has stressed that SriLankan Airlines should be under a full time director, Kapila Chandrasena concealing his employment at Mobitel has received salaries and privileges from both institutions.
Her evidence revealed that Mr. Kapila Chandrasena worked for Mobitel violating the conditions of the Finance Ministry.
It was revealed today that Mr. Kapila Chandrasena, who assumed office as CEO of SriLankan Airlines in 2011, has received a monthly salary of Rs. 500,000 as the CEO of Mobitel and monthly salary of Rs 250,000 as a consultant to Mobitel during 2009-2013.
Earlier the Presidential Commission was told that Mr. Chandrasena from 2011-2015 has obtained over Rs. 96 million as his personal expenses from the SriLankan airlines
Prior to his role as CEO of SriLankan, Kapila Chandrasena as the CEO of Mihin Lanka and Mobitel and, as the Chief Marketing Officer of Sri Lanka Telecom.
