Four elephants were killed when they were hit by a fuel tanker train plying from Orugodawatta, Colombo to Batticaloa on Tuesday in north central Sri Lanka.
The tanker train has collided with a herd of elephants crossing the Colombo-Gal Oya railway line near the 127 mile post in Puwakpitiya, Habarana at around 4:30 this morning.
The collision has derailed the train engine and two oil tankers severely damaging the track and one tanker has started to leak oil.

The damage to the track has completely stalled the Batticaloa-Trincomalee train service and operations have been limited up to Maho and Gal Oya.
A pregnant elephant was among the dead elephants, wildlife officials said.
