Speaker Karu Jayasuriya said attention has been paid to some recent media reports which said that the government allocated Rs. 1000 million for the reconstruction of the Parliament building this year.
In a statement, the Speaker said that the 30 year old parliament building complex is owned by the general public of Sri Lanka and it is essential to repair and renovate the building from time to time, like any other building.
The repairs had to be done in the course of the past three decades, but authorities have missed to carry out several vital renovations to this building.
Parliament, which operates under the political strings of the country’s legislative power, is a place where diplomats around the world regularly visit.
Furthermore, the parliament is the center where under whatever political streams the legislative power of the people of the country functions and the laws are made and it is also a place where high level diplomats from around the world come.
The timely renovation of this building cannot be ruled out at any time, the Speaker pointed out.
However, this year the government has allocated only Rs. 200 million for the renovations and not Rs. 1000 million as some media reports have claimed, the Speaker said.
