Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe who victoriously overcame a no-faith motion that challenged his leadership promised to take the opportunity to take the country forward with renewed vigor and speed.
Addressing the media following the victory over the no-confidence motion, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said he faced the challenge to protect people’s victories and not to score a private victory and thanked everyone who supported the development of the country.
“I am grateful to all of you who have supported me through these trying times. Let me thank you, my fellow MPs, for voting against the no-confidence motion and for abstaining from voting. It was gratifying to see all religious and ethnic communities in our country standing together to sustain what we achieved in 2015,” the Premier said.
“Let me also thank all of you from all denominations who conducted religious ceremonies and prayed for the defeat of those who engage in enmity, fabrication and deception, and those of you who sent thousands of messages of goodwill and good wishes during the last couple of weeks,” he said.
“This is a great achievement. I will not forget all of your services. Now we have a new journey. With the message we received as a government, we have to take our work more speedily.”
“We must use this opportunity to rejuvenate and take forward our program of action for peace, harmony, development and justice in our country in the coming months,” he added.
The Premier said after the 8th of January 2015 there has been a huge change in the country and the government has started a number of activities. The economy of the country is being developed. Development of the village has been started. Action has been taken to increase the income of the people.
“It is our duty to get closer to the people. Next year we need to carry out development to make an impact. A complete change in the UNP is needed and new teams need to be introduced to take the lead. Let’s win the majority support and go forward,” the Premier said.
